It’s not today’s most important news, but Apple just announced an update to one of their most iconic product, their white ear buds. Legendarily ubiquitous and low quality, the headphones have been redesigned to sound and fit better. The new earbuds, now called EarPods, have a round shape that’s meant to direct sound straight into the ear canal and feel more comfortable than the older style ‘buds. Apple claims EarPods will be competitive will higher quality audio gear, but we’re inclined to be skeptical: Apple isn’t exactly known for making high fidelity monitors.
Like with the old ear buds, Apple will manufacture two different types of Ear Pods. A model with a microphone and in-line remote will be bundled with the new iPhone 5, and presumably the older iPhone 4 and 4s as well, and a plain headset will come with the new iPods. If, for some strange reason, you want to grab a pair of EarPods Apple’s will sell them to you for $29.
iPod touch and iPod nano also come with the new Apple EarPods™ featuring a breakthrough design for a more natural fit, increased durability and an incredible acoustic quality typically reserved for higher-end earphones.
